North Oxfordshire is ironstone country, and the local building stock reflects it: a warm, ferruginous limestone that weathers distinctively and behaves quite differently from the paler oolitic limestone of the Cotswolds proper. Much of the character of Banbury's surrounding villages rests on that single material and on the consistency with which it was used.
That consistency is what conservation area designation here typically protects. Proposals introducing a different stone, a different mortar, or a modern reconstituted substitute tend to attract objection not because of the individual building but because of the break in local character.
Mortar specification deserves particular attention. Cement-rich pointing traps moisture in a soft, porous stone, and the resulting decay is both a conservation problem and a recurring source of difficulty in applications for repair.
