Warwick's historic core is defined by an unusual sequence: a medieval town substantially rebuilt after the fire of 1694, leaving a coherent late-seventeenth and eighteenth-century townscape alongside the medieval fabric that survived at the town's edges. The two read very differently, and understanding which a building belongs to is usually the first question a heritage assessment has to settle.
Buildings that survived the fire are frequently of exceptional interest and are correspondingly sensitive to change. Those built in the rebuilding are significant partly as a group — a planned response to a single event — which again makes the setting and the street scene part of what is being assessed.
The castle and its setting exert an influence well beyond the immediate site, and proposals affecting longer views are assessed with that in mind.
